This episode is live on International Women's Day, and what felt like the truest celebration of the holiday was to share a few heartfelt words with the women in my life. They're words that I need to hear and words I wish I'd heard sooner.
You are allowed to lead differently.
In fact, we need you to lead differently. I thought that I had to change in order to lead. Turns out, my grounding presence and my willingness to get to the emotional root of the matter are my leadership superpowers. Einstein said something like, “Our problems can’t be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.”
If we want a word that's different than the patriarchal, white supremacist, everything phobic world we're living in, we need to create different paradigms for leadership. I believe women are uniquely qualified to do that.
You deserve to receive.
These are words I have to remind myself often. Women are taught to be caregivers. Black women are taught to be sources of strength. And so we give to everyone but ourselves. You are not more worthy if you do it alone. You'll only be depleted. Let your relationships be reciprocal. Allow yourself to receive.
Your menstrual cycle is a gift.
I am a woman who bleeds, and I see that as an incredible gift. Our health classes don't teach us much about our periods and our cycles, but our cycles have so much to teach us. What would be possible if you saw your cycle as a blessing instead of a roadblock? What if we talked about our periods instead of whispering about them?
There's power in being connected to our cycles, and I wish more women would tap into it.
